Finding Your People: The Heart of Community

April 10, 2025

What Is Community?

Community isn’t just where you live—it’s who you lean on. It’s the group of people who see you, support you, and help you feel belongingness. It could be family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, or even strangers who become close over a shared passion or purpose.

At its core, community is about connection. It’s the feeling of not being alone in the world. We share so many human experiences that can seem unique or niche, but 9 times out of 10, there’s a community out there for just about everything, waiting to welcome you with open arms.

We all want to feel understood. To feel safe. To laugh, cry, grow, and be accepted for who we are at our most vulnerable. That’s what community offers—a place you can rely on, where you’re held up when you’re low and celebrated when you shine.

Life isn’t Meant to be Done Alone

Community reminds us that life isn’t meant to be done alone. For generations, especially among women, community was the heartbeat of survival and support—gathering in kitchens, sharing child-rearing, healing, grieving, creating together. Motherhood, in particular, was never meant to be a solo journey; it was held by circles of women who leaned on one another with trust, wisdom, and care. That deep-rooted connection reminds us that asking for help and offering it is not weakness—it’s legacy.

Building or Finding Your Community

Not sure where your people are? Here are some niche examples that can inspire you on ways to start finding your community.

If you’re into gardening…

Try checking out local Facebook groups focused on urban gardening or native plants in your area. Facebook is GREAT for this kind of support. The Nextdoor app is another great tool for finding nearby plant swaps, community gardens, local shop reviews, or just chatting with fellow green thumbs down the street in your grow region.

If you love mountain biking…

Look for group rides through bike shops, local trail associations, or apps like Meetup. Many communities have weekend rides open to all levels, and it’s a great way to meet people who share your pace and passion. If you’re worried about being a beginner, I can confidently say, every single niche always has beginners and they are so welcomed. You have to start somewhere, and the pros of your niche will be so excited to coach you up, support you, and help you find the resources you need.

If you love yoga…

Search for studios in your area on social media or Google. See if they have upcoming events you can attend and meet people! Don’t be afraid to try a new event, take a class, and talk to the people around you. They’re there for the same reasons you are, so chances are, you sparking convo would make their day. You never know the connections the universe may bring you!

Want to connect with someone in a similar job or life dynamic?

If you’re a remote worker, freelancer, small business owner, or balancing parenting and a career, look for coworking spaces, LinkedIn groups, or even niche online communities or forums. Sometimes just knowing someone “gets it” makes all the difference. Having a friend in the same life situation or job dynamic can be so resourceful and comforting.

Putting Yourself Out There

It’s totally normal to feel worried or scared putting yourself out there. But community that you’ll build on the other side is worth it. Here are some general tips for putting yourself out there, and taking the first steps to building your community:

  1. Follow your interests
  2. Be the first to reach out
  3. Show up consistently
  4. Create the space you wish existed
  5. Lead with kindness and openness
  6. Every connection starts with a small, simple act

At the end of the day, we’re all human, and we want to belong, it’s in our nature. We’re all learning what it means to us to live our best lives. To love deeper. To lead with authenticity. We’re growing through joy and mistakes and trying our best. Community holds space to do just that.

If you’re really looking for extra support on your journey into finding community, book a session with a healer or practitioner. Get the inspiration you need and guidance on your next steps into whatever that may be for you.

Remember: we’re not meant to do this life alone. And we don’t have to.

You deserve a community that sees you, hears you, and holds you. And you have the power to help build that—for yourself, and for others. Love you <3
